National History

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 15, 1908. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women.
T​he first step of establishing a national body in perpetuity was taken on January 29, 1913 when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was legally incorporated.
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is:
*To encourage high scholastic and ethical standards
*To promote unity and friendship among college women
*To study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women
*To maintain a progressive interest in college life

Chapter History

On May 4, 1980, on the Teaneck and Rutherford campuses of Fairleigh Dickinson University, a group of female students who had expressed an interest in becoming members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. formed a community service group called “Sisters Inc.” This group of students later became the “Nineteen Strivers”. Becoming the first Black Greek Letter Organization on Campus.

Since its chartering, the Nu Kappa chapter has worked diligently to uphold the legacy of both our Founder’s and Charter Members by developing programs that focus on the social, economic, health, and educational needs on the Fairleigh Dickinson University campus, and endlessly being of “Service to All Mankind.”
